This is a serious links course that’ll give you an unforgettable experience. You’ll have scenic views on every hole as you play along almost 2 miles of North Sea coastline.
I’ve played here before and I’ll keep on coming back. It’s a professional welcoming set up and most enjoyable – this is a very special place.
I like the course design and how it tests your game. Yes, it’s very scenic and an interesting variation of the holes. The holes are also reasonably separated from each other. Undulating fairways, with punishing bunkers, nestling among the dunes, dramatic holes right down by the rugged coastline, elevated tees and greens and tricky undulated greens.
Simply an outstanding links golf experience!
I shared the experience this day with Tel (from London) and the brothers from Alabama, USA, - Jeff and Robert. My caddie, Andy completed the group. I believe we all were going through different emotions regarding our game, but some good golf was played and to be remembered. I had tremendous fun – Thanks guys.
I had a strange game with very odd shots that turned up good. Managed to do a 40 on the front nine and 39 on the back for a very good 79 (gross). I’m very pleased with the score, but not with how I was striking (mostly short) the irons.
The holes that stand out for me are:
Hole 6 – 318 yards par 4
A drivable Par 4 with a real risk and reward theme. Place your tee shot on the top plateau to the right and the ball will work itself towards the green. Make sure you though have at least a 200 yards carry. Played is safe with a 4-iron off tee, second shot a duff, third on green and two putts for a bogey 5. Playing it safe normally doesn’t work for me – when will I learn!
Hole 7 – 436 yards par 4
A long par 4 that normally plays in to the wind. Aim up the right side and the slope will bring the ball back into the centre of fairway. Take an extra club on the approach shot – it’s uphill. Don’t be to the right (two bunkers) or to the left (grass hollow), so dead centre is the right place. 280 yards drive followed by a fairway club on the green and two putts for a par – brilliant.
Hole 12 – 566 yards par 5
Enjoy the stunning view for a moment. The on to business – aim right and stay away from the ocean that’s on the entire left hand side. Except for the ocean, no real trouble until you come to the approach shot. Two pothole bunkers are guarding this 70-yard long green! Great hole. Three straight shots up on green and a two put for a par. No drama, just good golf!
Hole 15 – 185 yards par 3
You need to carry the ball all the way over the rocks/ocean to the small green on the tip of a small peninsula. Aim left on green and the slop will feed the ball to green centre. I did not do this. Played it short of green followed by a good chip and one put for a par 3.
Playing Kingsbarns is a tremendous golf experience and one not to be missed. The only issue is, once you have played it, you want to play it again.
